EVK HELIOS Hyperspectral Camera

Hyperspectral imaging classifies objects and parts of objects based on their chemical composition, making the invisible visible.
EVK HELIOS hyperspectral cameras work in real-time, are fully automated, and are specifically designed for industrial applications. The short-wavelength infrared (SWIR) cameras capability for contactless and non-destructive measurements, coupled with the analysis of chemical material properties, opens up a wide range of applications in food processing and control, waste management, as well as raw material extraction and recovery. Hyperspectral cameras offer numerous possibilities that would not be achievable with conventional cameras that only cover visible light.

Products

EVK Helios

EVK HELIOS hyperspectral cameras support current industry standards to ensure reliable and continuous real-time monitoring and sorting. The common feature of all EVK HELIOS cameras is that they measure in the wavelength range from 930 – 1700 nm, which is particularly helpful if you want to identify materials. Due to their robust and hygienic design, they are perfect for industrial applications. EVK HELIOS hyperspectral cameras are available as a CORE or CLASS model.

EVK HELIOS Core cameras are ideal for high-quality spectrum capture in laboratory testing as well as for the flexible use as custom models. These hyperspectral core cameras provide spectral data. External calibration is not necessary.

EVK HELIOS Class cameras additionally feature an integrated classification system that uses multivariate spectral data analysis to classify material streams in real-time. The result is visualized in false colors, and also known as chemical imaging. EVK HELIOS hyperspectral class cameras are an all-in-one device, making them perfect for a seamless and rapid integration into your facility.

Real-time classification based on chemical properties,
directly in the production line

Hyperspectral cameras are reliable and precise measurement tools for industrial material streams. Thanks to this non-contact, non-invasive method materials are analyzed and classified based on their chemical composition. This makes it possible to qualitatively and quantitatively measure properties such as protein, fat, sugar, salt, starch, moisture, oil, or calorific value directly in the production line.

Value Statements

Automated Continuous Operation

EVK HELIOS hyperspectral systems replace and optimize error-prone manual materials sorting or time-consuming lab analyses. Save time and money through automation while simultaneously increasing your product quality.

Excellent Signal-to-Noise Ratio

EVK HELIOS hyperspectral cameras have an excellent signal-to-noise ratio, providing necessary key data in real-time. While typical features such as spatial resolution (number of pixels) and frame rate are often used for comparison, response speed and signal-to-noise ratio are crucial, especially for high-speed applications that require high illumination levels and short exposure times.

Short Time-to-Market with Integrated EVK Solutions

Reduce your development time with EVK's integrated personalized all-in-one solutions. Get hardware, software and integration services from a single source and execute your project rapidly and flawlessly.

Design for Industrial Requirements

EVK HELIOS cameras are specifically designed for industrial applications. The compact and robust design without moving mechanical parts and excellent calibration and temperature stability make them ideal for use in harsh environments or areas with high hygiene requirements.

Diverse Applications

The acquired information can be used for analysis, inspection, process control, sorting, robot guidance, and decision-making across various industries. These include the food industry, recycling and waste management, mining, as well as the cosmetic and pharmaceutical sectors.

EVK product accessories to integrate our sensor-based solutions

EVK IRIL
EVK IRIL is a double-sided illumination unit specifically designed for hyperspectral camera applications. Illumination is one of the central components of a spectrometric setup, typically consisting of a light source, material, and measuring instrument. The unit projects a line-shaped light beam onto the conveyor belt or slide, providing a perfectly balanced light intensity for optimal image quality. The illumination unit is available in different lengths, which can be flexibly combined to match various working widths. Heat dissipates passively through the cooling profile.

Hyperspectral Camera Lens
Selecting the right lens for an optical system positively impacts the overall system performance. Many factors must be considered when choosing the perfect lens for a specific application and include lens mount, spectral range, focal length, working distance, object size, and incident light.

HSI Technology in Detail

As a pioneer in hyperspectral imaging (HSI) for industrial applications such as sorting and monitoring solutions, at EVK we know what matters for industrial applications. Since 2006, hundreds of EVK products have been successfully installed in various sorting systems and process monitoring applications.

The camera system captures each point in an inspection line in the near-infrared (NIR) and shortwave infrared (SWIR) wavelength ranges from 930 to 1700 nm, enabling precise surface measurements. These rapidly acquired spatially-resolved spectral data identify the chemical composition of substances and are visually represented with false-color images. This camera technology is combined with smart real-time evaluation methods, making it possible to instantly capture and analyze data, and trigger the appropriate response.

If this technology is used, for example, in sorting processes, reaction times of less than 2 ms can be achieved with the algorithms. It is possible to remove non-recyclables immediately.

Quantitative Material Analysis for Industrial Applications

The EVK sensor systems were developed in close cooperation with partners from the mechanical and plant engineering sector and support machine learning. This has created a measuring system that is specially adapted for use in industrial working conditions. Thanks to the EVK SQALAR software and specially developed algorithms, machine learning, and data processing for inspection, monitoring, and sorting, EVK HELIOS hyperspectral camera systems reliably detect and help remove unwanted objects from material streams. This real-time capability and robust design make the systems suitable for continuous 24/7 operation in industrial environments. The quantitative analysis of materials in product streams opens up entirely new application options. Sorting decisions can be made in real-time directly in the production line based on referenced analysis values.

Sensor Fusion for Increased Purity and Sorting Accuracy

EVK makes it possible to combine data from various sensors, such as hyperspectral cameras, color cameras, or metal sensors, and extract key data from the results, forming the basis for further process-relevant decisions. Materials can be classified based on their color, shape, size, as well as their chemical composition and, if desired, sorted or distributed in real time.

Use Cases

Hyperspectral cameras have been successfully used in numerous industries to sort and inspect materials for many years. In waste management, for example, they separate transparent PET from other types of plastics or distinguish bulk material from heterogeneous waste. In food production, this technology is successfully used, for example, to determine fruit ripeness or remove foreign bodies. We also provide solutions for mining to identify valuable minerals from rocks, and in the pharmaceutical industry, to perform non-invasive monitoring.
