Separating Transparent PET
from Other Plastics

Sensor-based sorting technology has taken on a key role in urban mining and recycling, recovering valuable raw materials and reusing them in the manufacturing industry. Recycled materials are increasingly used in the production of glass, paper and plastics, and precise classification and grading of these materials is crucial to ensure product quality.

Challenge: Detection of Different Plastic Types

Traditional color cameras are limited to processing information in the visible light spectrum. This presents an obstacle when it comes to separating transparent PET from other types of plastic and classifying them correctly.

Solution: Smart Sorting Commands with
EVK Hyperspectral Imaging

EVK’s hyperspectral imaging systems enable the classification of different materials based on their chemical composition. While conventional color cameras reach their limits, EVK’s hyperspectral imaging systems significantly expand the possibilities of material recognition.

The fusion of sensors, such as the combination of color camera and hyperspectral camera increases the sensitivity and specificity of sorting. This enables separation of materials not only based on color, shape and size, but also based on their chemical properties. By using EVK HELIOS hyperspectral cameras and intelligent software, transparent PET and other types of plastic can be accurately detected and separated, contributing to improved quality of recycled materials and ultimately to more sustainable production.

Technology

Hyperspectral Imaging offers the degree of classification accuracy required for applications in the recycling industry by directly measuring chemical molecular composition through the absorption of light (spectroscopy).

EVK’s portfolio of sensor-based technology includes hyperspectral cameras and inductive sensor systems that can be used individually or combined with a color camera with sensor fusion to create a high-performance sorting application.
